Geek Technique
STUFF I USE cos u asked
———————————
Like I said, you asked. Now I have a new home studio up in Harlem, and I love it, plus my space in Brooklyn. PLUS I’M STARTING TO SELL STUFF OFF SO IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING. That’s how we keeps it safe in NYC
TRUE! I try to come off all slick but I’m a big geek for equipment so if you want to talk about that I’m sometimes in the mood but not always
TRUE! It’s a bit sad; we all should be out helping others survive, and there we are, having spent the last 10 years in our bedrooms, doing endless hammer-ons.
TRUE! I need tighter parameters, I’m going soft, so I’ve been streamlining my shit (except for my guitar collection, which seems to have developed a mind of it’s own).
Here’s some machines I use at home to make music, upon which I’ve spent far too much money (and so have you if you’re reading this boring-ass page)
HEAR ME NOW ! I still seek to make fucked up and beautiful sounds, people!
Here’s what I got:
now how can I say it with proper emphasis? The guys at FOLKTEK make the raddest, most beautiful music generating sculptures anywhere. I just bought a LUMINIST GARDEN, and it’s all over the latest couple of film scores I’ve done. PLEASE LOOK AT WHAT THEY DO!! HERE: http://folktek.com/
Sequential Circuits- Prophet 10, Prophet 5, Prophet VS (fucking brilliant and underrated) Prophet 600 (broken!) , Pro One, TOM

2 Wurlitzer 200a student models, 110 and 220v for both sides o the ocean
Maestro ECHOPLEX EP-2
‘50s Deagan Vibraphone
Swedish-made pump organ, circa 1900
trumpets, percussion, piles of stuff i can’t really play. A Latvian lute of some kind. A dulcimer from the ‘20s.
Harmonium, bought in New Delhi off the dude who made George Harrison’s sitar. True! He had photos!
loads of wierd drum machines, including: Maestro Rhythm King, Rhythm Jester, Acetone Rhythm Ace, Univox, ELI Compurhythm (my fave), Synare (a la “Whip It”), Yamaha RY30, Roland 505 (sucks but that’s good sometimes)
Plus some homemade oddities like this little metal mixer that allows you to plug lots of pedals into themselves and go SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
And I just super dig the Fulltone Tape Echo, which is awesome and sees heavy heavy use on the A Camp record and just about everything else I’ve been involved with lately
digital: i like and have:
Oberheim/ Gibson Echoplex
Nord Wave, has some OK sounds, and a Nord Stage that I use mostly as a MIDI controller.
A Korg Kharma , and a MS2000. VERY useful when lazy. And the new Korg Micro X, which looks like a joke but isn’t!
I sold all my Line 6 processing products. I’m sorry but they did not age well.
Electrix products: Repeater and the Filter Factory. Getting tired of them though too.
Akai MPC 2000xl ….now my boy Domali has it cos I can’t figure the thing out. I’m passing it around.
I gave into the software stuff and am using Structure, and just about everything I do for film has Storm Drum 2 in effect. Plus Absynth which one has to admit is pretty rad, and because I’m totally lazy and the product is totally rad I use G-Force MTron, on EVERYTHING
i have 2 systems, one Digi 003 and one DIGI 002, in Harlem running off a Intel quad-core and in Brooklyn a Intel Duo core.
outboard:
-Avalon (V737)
- 3 Emphirical Labs Distressors
-UA 1176 remake
-set of racked Neve 33135s
-RNC and a RNL
Do I need more than that? Nope.
Mics, boring but I will tell you a super secret only cos you’ve come this far: buy an APEX 460 before people figure out they’re the best mics on the market for the price. You heard it here.
I’ve also got 2 mobile set-ups with Mboxes and those little AKAI keyboard controllers so I can pop and lock on the plane.

been playing a lot of bass lately, must confess I sold my fridge of an SVT and got an ugly but amazing amp by Markbass, this Italian company that makes amazing amazing stuff that just looks awful.
pedals are fun but I dont wanna list all of them EXCEPT MY BOSS HM-1 4-ever, SCREEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! And Electro Harmonix in general gets a shout cos they make great shit and they’re super nice. Oh and something (homemade?) that’s a silver box that I’ve been using lately, no idea who made it, but it’s a sick distortion box with a really heavy gate , it just goes wham!!
Also I’m deeply into an old TC Electronics Chorus/ Pitch Mod/ Flange pedal. It’s my new shizzle. And a big Morley wah. AND a Mu-tron III. All from my boy Marc, thanks Marc!!!
oh and this Fulltone OCD pedal, wow, love their Clyde Deluxe Wah, and the Deja Vibe…and the Foxx Tone Machine reissue…..and an old EHX Electric Mistress, sveet!
More EHX: the RIDDLE Q envelope pedal is great, the FREEZE pedal is super rad, the RING THING is boss as hell. Though I’m very interested in the Pigtronix Mothership which seems similar but even more awesome.
But my ABSOLUTE fave pedal at the moment: the Source Audio Soundblox Multiwave Distortion Pro. This pedal has absolutely floored me, it’s totally unlike anything else out there. A really special unit. These days I’m recording with it at all times, even with the clean setting if just for the fantastic compression. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
Ok I wound up listing a bunch of pedals. Did you see that? I got excited.
How do you do your thing? Tell me stuff, trade with me, because…..
Still I seek unidentifible magikal sounds. Still I desire machine-control thru pure thoughtpower.
